The Umbrian
town of Perugia proudly announces the return of a Prodigal Artwork, hometown boy Pinturicchio's "Madonna
and Child." Painted at the end of the 15th century, the masterpiece remained in the same family for 400
years and then simply vanished into thin air. Art detectives searched in vain until the work suddenly surfaced
last spring during an auction in Vienna. It was acquired, thoroughly restored and placed on view in Palazzo
Baldeschi. There it will stay until February 2, which would have been Pinturicchio's 500th birthday. After
that it will be on permanent display at the National Gallery of Umbria, also in Perugia. Click
