Private Guided Walking Tour in Bologna
Piazzas, Arcades, Churches & Palazzos
Bologna's ancient town center is one of the best preserved in Europe. This private walking tour will take you through fascinating squares, large pedestrian areas, and welcoming arcades. It also includes visits to churches and palazzos, all of which are free of charge. Starting at Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city, you'll continue to the former Stock Exchange where, under a glass floor, you can see the archeological excavations of the ancient Roman Forum (closed on Sunday and on Monday morning). You'll also see the historical seats of political power: Palazzo di Re Enzo, Town Hall (including the Sala Farnese and the Apartment of the Cardinal Legate), Palazzo dei Notai, Palazzo del Podestà, and Palazzo dei Banchi, as well as the outstanding Neptune Fountain, a masterpiece in the mannerist style of the sculptor Jean de Boulogne. Also on this square is the gothic Basilica of San Petronio, where you can visit, among other things, the Cappella Bolognini and a sun-dial designed by the astronomer Cassini.
Continuing along an elegant portico'd promenade you'll come to the 16th-century University building and the spectacular 17th-century Anatomical Theatre (closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday all day). On you'll go through the picturesque alleys of the old market, among delicatessens, noodle shops, fishmongers, and fruit and vegetable stalls, to reach Piazza Santo Stefano. With magnificent 14th- and 15th-century buildings and palazzi, the square takes its name from a group of small Romanesque churches visited by pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Continuing past a fascinating cluster of 13th-century buildings with wooden porticoes, you'll end your visit at the foot of the Two Towers, symbol of the city.
