Only a few feet from this 17th-century building, there is a nondescript door that leads to an underground labyrinth attesting to the ancient origins of the area. A dozen steps down are walls that come from the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At the time when the Coliseum was built, this block was a storehouse where food shipped in on the nearby Tiber River was kept until it was consumed by the populace. Today, this fascinating world is a true off-the-beaten-path wonder of ancient Rome. But you don't have to go underground to realize how historic this whole neighborhood is: just one block away is Via Giulia, where the crème de la crème of Renaissance Rome erected their spectacular palaces, including Palazzo Farnese and Palazzo Spada, two of the most memorable single-family homes in Rome. Just a few minutes' walk away are the lively outdoor market at Campo de' Fiori, the elegant fountains of Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and the authentic neighborhood of Trastevere. The great thing about this location is that, although it is right in the heart of Old Rome and all its attractions (St. Peter's is just across the river), the street is almost never found by tourists, so when you stay here you get to feel like a real Roman, even if only for a few days.

Roma Elegante is on the first floor of a newly renovated elevator building. Photos cannot depict the wonderful ambiance of this home. You enter the air-conditioned 970-square-foot apartment through a foyer with a large wardrobe, full-size mirror and bookshelves. Beyond this is a dining area with loads of windows and a table and chairs for four, which opens onto to the ultra-modern kitchen, featuring a gas range, electric oven, full fridge, toaster, coffeemaker, dishwasher and washing machine. Also in this wing is a bedroom with twin beds that cannot be joined, as well as a modern bathroom with double stall shower.

On the other side of the foyer is the living room, with big bright windows, a sofa, two armchairs (one of which folds out to a single bed for a child), satellite TV and telephone. Next is a study with a desk and large wardrobe, and a 6'1"-high loft hosting the master bedroom, with a queen bed. Both bedrooms in this apartment face the courtyard, making them great places to get a good night's rest.
