Roman Coliseum
|
The area around the Coliseum gets a lot of bad press - they say it is noisy, crowded and not very charming. That may be true of SOME areas near the Coliseum, but not this one! This very historical residential neighborhood occupies about sixteen square blocks all nestled in a triangle between the Imperial Ruins and the Church of San Giovanni, which is actually the Pope’s “parish church.” As you can imagine, it is the most elaborate parish church on earth! Also in this area is one of our favorite churches, called Santissimi Quattro Coronati. Dedicated to four ancient martyrs, this 12th-century bastion is one of the most mystical places in Rome. When it was built, this spot was a pastoral haven shaded by massive trees and inhabited by Rome’s wealthy religious elite. Perhaps for this reason the church looks like a massive stone bastion on the outside. Yet, concealed within those walls is a magical, serene cloister that is a paradise for anyone seeking brief respite from the traffic of Rome. We highly recommend you visit this wonderful treasure trove, which also includes a 13th-century cycle of frescoes depicting Pope Sylvester curing Emperor Constantine of leprosy.
Just down the street, almost in the shadow of history, stands a recently renovated building with the earthy red façade that is so typical in Rome. Take the elevator to the first floor and open the door into the foyer of this very roomy 1200-square-foot apartment, which was also just redone from top to bottom. Off the foyer is the living room, which has a double sleep sofa and armchairs, as well as a nook where a computer with DSL connection sits on its own little desk. An archway leads to a separate formal dining area. This double room is gloriously illuminated by two large windows that afford great views down the street to the Coliseum.
At the far end of the hallway is the eat-in kitchen, which has a full fridge, gas oven and stove top, US coffeemaker, toaster and microwave, as well as a table for six. Next door is the bathroom, which features a bathtub with wall-mounted shower and curtain, as well as a washing machine. A very large walk-in closet with full-length mirror is off the hall and serves both bedrooms, one of which has a king-sized bed and one of which has two singles or one king-sized bed. The layout and space of this apartment make it perfect for a family of up to 6, or for two couples. Its location, near several bus lines and the subway, makes it logistically ideal for getting to all of the many unforgettable sites of Rome. Lastly, the supermarket and many shops right downstairs make it a great way to celebrate La Dolce Vita in the city where it was first invented!
