Roma Imperiale
|
Ask any Rome oldtimer what the most authentic neighborhoods in the historic center are and he or she will undoubtedly mention Trastevere, of course. But they'll probably also mention Monti, a tiny quartiere that's not usually written about in guidebooks. Nestled halfway between the Spanish Steps and the Coliseum, it is actually one of the Eternal City's best-kept secrets, and like many treasures, it's been right there under everyone's noses all the time.
Measuring barely more than 20 blocks square, Monti occupies the hill behind Trajan's Market. At its edges are the Forum, Santa Maria Maggiore, Via Nazionale and Via Cavour, yet it has none of the late-19th-century vehicular clamor and architectural clumsiness that we usually associate with the area around the Coliseum. Monti's 4- and 5-story buildings date back as far as the 1400s and are painted the terra cotta, umber and burnt sienna colors that make pictures of Rome so spectacular. The streets are lined with "real people" shops whose owners sell not souvenirs but the staples of everyday life: brooms, fresh tomatoes, extension cords, whole chickens, casual dresses.... It is the epitome of Roman life: you can stand on one corner and see a 1st-century stone wall, a 14th-century brick tower, and a 21st-century traffic sign complete with graffiti!
At the top of Monti there is a lush botanical garden surrounded by a few apartment buildings. The windows in the living room, studio and bathroom of Roma Imperiale face onto a lush bamboo forest, giving the impression that you are in a country cottage. All the other windows face an inner courtyard, making this a great choice for those who don’t like city noises. On the third floor of a recently restored 17th-century townhouse, the brand new apartment measures 900 square feet and is well laid-out, spacious, beautifully furnished and cheerfully bright. There is a place for everything here, and the myriad drawers and cupboards offer enough storage space for you to stay several months.
You enter into a large foyer with a dresser and settee. At the end is the powder room, lined with mosaic tile and featuring a sink and toilet. Around the corner is the hallway, with one wall of smoked-glass windows. Opening off the foyer and the hallway is the master bedroom, furnished with a queen bed, TV (Italian only), desk with iMac and printer, large dresser, pants press, three closets and several large cupboards. There is a small window in this room that opens onto a very quiet courtyard.
At the end of the hallway is the charming studio, with a desk (and DSL line) and an excellent sofa that becomes a comfortable single bed. Opening off one side of the studio is the large living room, with a good double sleep sofa, a dining table for six, a wall of bookcases and a TV with DVD (Italian standard only). There is also a CD player here.
Opening off the other side of the studio is the very modern kitchen, which anyone would be happy to have in their own home. Equipped with an electric oven, gas range, microwave, full fridge, washing machine, dishwasher and kettle, it has a vast assortment of dishes, cookware and utensils.
At the other end of the studio is the door to the bathroom, which has a bathtub and enclosed shower. Throughout the apartment, the lighting is excellent and the owners’ interesting collection of books, CDs, DVDs, tapes, framed artworks, antiques and collectibles from around the world truly make this a home away from home.
