Right across the street from the cathedral stands a 14th-century patrician palazzo still owned and inhabited by the same family who has had it since the Renaissance. In those days, they gladly offered studio space to Donatello, one of Florence's most renowned artists, who created many of his masterpieces here. The present head of the family, a warm and gregarious lady, realized that she and her charming husband could not possibly use the entire place for themselves, so they decided it would be fun to share this priceless slice of history with enlightened travelers. This is not an accommodation for tourists - it is a true home away from home, still furnished with the family portraits, a library of leather-bound volumes, heirloom china and silver, carpets brought back from the Orient on sailing ships chased by pirates. You will most likely meet your hosts during your stay, because they enjoy dropping in occasionally to greet their guests. It is their paramount desire that you make this your Florentine home, and the way they have furnished and appointed it does indeed make the place feel like a 5-star home, not a hotel.
Every room at the palazzo is air-conditoned, reached by elevator, and totally unique. Standard doubles have two twin beds or a queen bed, plus a marble bathroom with bathtub/shower. There are two of these on an upper floor that can be combined to form a suite. The junior suites are immense, with gorgeous painted walls or ceilings and parquet floors, a single day bed, and bathrooms with bathtub or stall shower. The suites have a separate living room with double sofa bed, bedroom, and bathroom with bathtub and separate stall shower. One of these is on the top floor and has a small entry with settees and TV, a bedroom with king-sized bed, a bathroom with tub, wall shower and separate WC room, and a hallway that leads to a small twin room with a window facing the Duomo. The Blue Suite is very quiet, facing the internal courtyard of the palace. Its entrance is on the "mezzanine" between the 1st and 2nd floors, with 16 steps down to the 1st floor, where you find a bedroom with a king-sized canopy bed that faces the courtyard, a sitting room with two single sofa beds, and, on request, a kitchenette, plus a very large bathroom with separate shower and bathtub. The Empire Suite might not be for everyone, but is truly regal. Measuring almost 430 square feet, it has a separate entry with huge wardrobe, plus a bedroom with king-sized bed, magnificently frescoed ceilings and very tall windows facing the Duomo. All the furnishings are original Empire-style antiques, plus it has the 21st-century amenities such as satellite TV, mini-bar, direct-dial telephone, wireless Internet access, safe, and air conditioning, as well as the pièce de resistance, a spacious frescoed bathroom with Empire-style bathtub, separate stall shower and hair dryer, not to mention a large mirror that makes it possible to gaze upon the Duomo from the tub! Upstairs (reached by 15 steps) is the Honeymoon Suite, perhaps the most wonderful room in Florence for young lovers. It features a large two-story living room with floor-to-ceiling windows that open right onto the cathedral dome, less than 25 yards away; a double sleep sofa; a raised hot tub; a bedroom with queen bed and skylight; and a bathroom with tub and separate stall shower.
The common areas in the palazzo are spectacular, but they are also so warm and inviting that you will want to retire here in the late afternoon for a cocktail or a cup of tea. For workaholics, there is a free Internet point as well as wi-fi reception; for fun excursions through the city and its picturesque hills, there is an electric car that has permission to be parked anywhere (rental costs about 20 Euro/hour or 50 Euro for three hours). The reception area is staffed from 9am to 8:30 pm, by friendly locals who will be happy to help you plan each moment of your stay in Florence.
