Villa Fiesole

Romantic Lodgings

Character: Small and charming, with two buildings: a 19th-century villa with high frescoed ceilings and marble floors, and the former greenhouse of Villa San Michele, now converted into elegant guestrooms.
Advantages: Quieter than the city; good restaurants nearby; fantastic view of the Duomo from the terrace.
Location: In the town of Fiesole, on a hillside overlooking Florence. This is a great place if you don't want to be out in the country or in the heart of the city, because you can take a city bus right down the hill into the historic center in 20 minutes (it stops very near the hotel), but in the afternoon you can relax in the quiet shade of the pine trees and enjoy the view. Size: About 20 rooms in the new wing and six in the villa.
Features: Air conditioning, direct-dial telephone in both bedroom and bathroom, terrycloth robes and matching slippers, perfumed bath salts and creams, heated terrycloth towels, full-sized tubs, hair dryers and large, comfortable beds, cedar-lined closets. Complimentary wireless in public areas. Small swimming pool. Price includes breakfast.
Minimum stay: One night.
Disadvantages: The bathrooms in the villa are not as modern as those in the new wing, and the villa does not have an elevator.
Car needed: No.

This beautiful 19th-century mansion occupies one of the most enviable positions in Florence. High in the hills overlooking the city, right next door to Villa San Michele (one of Italy's top five hotels), it can be reached easily by city bus and it also has its own parking lot. This makes it the perfect base for travelers who are driving through Tuscany and want to spend a few days shopping and museum-hopping in Firenze.

The hotel comprises two buildings. Today's main center of activity was actually born to be the villa's greenhouse in the last century. Now it holds a cozy reading room, sunny breakfast room and several tranquil guestrooms, most of which take advantage of the original structure's entirely glass walls. Of course the building has been completely renovated, so that the rooms offer all modern amenities such as air conditioning, satellite TV, direct-dial telephone in both bedroom and bathroom, terrycloth robes and matching slippers, perfumed bath salts and creams, heated terrycloth towels, full-sized tubs, hair dryers and large, comfortable beds, even cedar-lined closets; deluxe rooms also have a panoramic view. Non-Smoking rooms are available on request.

The second building is the original villa. Guests who choose this house stay in deluxe rooms or junior suites with all the same amenities, plus charmingly frescoed ceilings that soar fifteen feet overhead. One of the junior suites has a large private patio and can be connected to a standard double room with bath, for a total of five people.

Rarely will you find a more friendly staff than at Villa Fiesole. They are always eager to help you organize your jaunts to the city or drives into the nearby Mugello Valley or south into Chianti. If you're not in the mood for a restaurant meal in the evening, enjoy a typical Tuscan meal in the hotel dining room or on the panoramic terrace. In the summer, take a quick dip in the pool and then sip an aperitivo while you watch the sun set over the capital of the Renaissance. Down below, horns are blaring, motorbikes are speeding and nerves are frazzling, but from your viewpoint Florence looks just as it did when Michelangelo worked in Fiesole four hundred years ago.
