Villa Crespi

Step through the elaborate gate of this unique estate and you will magically find yourself in the world of The Arabian Nights. Built in 1880 by a fanciful local cotton magnate, it is indeed a dream-come-true, a magical reconstruction of the Moorish palaces he had admired on his many visits to 19th-century Baghdad. The exquisitely detailed results of his dream now await you on the shores of Orta, one of Italy's most romantic lakes. Few places on earth could be more perfectly suited for the honeymoon of your dreams.

Most likely, the first time you see this one-of-a-kind residence will be when you spot its minaret looming above the forest about a ten-minute stroll from the picturesque town of Orta. In years gone by, kings, queens, princes, captains of industry, poets and artists all scanned the horizon for this landmark as they made their way here from around the world, first as the guests of Benigno Crespi himself and then of the villa's second owner, Marquis Fracassi of Torre Rossano. Legendary parties and soirés were held here at the height of its glory during the 1930s.

You will feel completely enveloped by the Oriental atmosphere of this property as soon as you step into the foyer, with its starry vault. In every single room, walls are hung with damask and silk, or covered with intricate stucco work. Priceless parquetry lines the floors. As you step from room to room through horseshoe arches, look up and admire the frescoed ceilings, the 17th- and 18th-century oil paintings and antique furniture. If you can tear yourself away from the details, throw open your windows for a picture-perfect view of the jewel-like lake.

There are only fourteen rooms at Villa Crespi, and each one is completely unique and memorable. Deluxe Rooms have a king-size canopy bed, hydromassage shower, and garden view. Superior Rooms have twin beds or a king-sized bed, private balcony with lake view and whirlpool bathtub. Junior Suites have a garden view, king-sized bed, sitting area and hydromassage shower. Executive Suites, the Gold Suite, the Royal Suite, the Imperial Suite and the Queen Victoria Suite have a lake view, king-sized canopy bed, sitting area and whirlpool bathtub. All rooms and suites have romantic piped music, air conditioning, satellite color TV, direct-dial telephone, safe, superb modern bathrooms, hair dryer and mini bar.

This enchanting property offers a perfect start for your Italian vacation. It is less than an hour's easy drive from Malpensa Airport, making it a great place to recover from long, exhausting flights. Check into your room, freshen up and then go for a stroll along the lakeshore or through the medieval cobblestone alleys of Orta San Giulio. Then return to the villa for an aperitif in the garden or the cozy cocktail lounge, followed by a 5-star Mediterranean dinner in the Michelin-star restaurant, presided over by chef Antonio Cannavacciuolo. After a quiet, restful night's sleep, spend your days exploring Lake Maggiore, shopping at the many nearby designer outlets, perhaps even hopping over into Switzerland. If it's total physical wellbeing you're after, sign up for a session in the hotel's fitness center, followed by a refreshing sauna. Or take advantage of the swimming pool, tennis courts and water sports facilities made available at the villa's sister hotel just one kilometer away. Whether you stay two nights or a month, we guarantee you will leave reluctantly, watching the minaret disappear in your rear-view mirror and already anticipating the next time you will see it on the horizon.
