Ideally positioned in the Fornillo area of Positano, high enough to enjoy views yet at a short distance from one of the nicest beaches, Villa Fornillo is a much loved and very charming 18th-century family home, filled with character and memories. The entrance door hides a patio with a lemon grove that runs the length of the ground floor rooms. One level up is a large paved terrace, a real garden of delight adorned with classic columns supporting a vibrant bougainvillea and wisteria pergola. Large terracotta pots hold mature jasmine, palms and colorful geraniums, with views of Positano and the village of Fornillo completing the picture. The well maintained interiors feature high vaulted ceilings and terracotta floors and are furnished with period pieces. Many original paintings and portraits, prints and ceramics give the house a very intimate feeling and an Old World atmosphere. Built on three levels with a mezzanine between, Villa Fornillo measures 1615 square feet and has two entrances, one from a typical street staircase and another from the private garage, a true rarity in Positano.
The house is reached via 22 steps up from the street or 25 steps up from the private garage. You enter on the ground floor from the patio into the hall/sitting room. A very pretty twin bedroom opens onto the lemon garden and has its own bathroom with shower. At the end of the hall, the large master bedroom features a queen bed, a single bed, an en suite bathroom with bathtub, and two French doors onto the terrace. Next door is a TV room with library, which opens onto a different pergola-shaded terrace. Inside stairs lead up to the living room, furnished with sofas and a large fireplace with tiles. The ceramic-tiled eat-in kitchen is well-equipped, with a full fridge, oven, range, grill and washing machine, and opens onto a service balcony facing the street.
On the mezzanine floor there is a dining room for 7, with a window and French door opening onto the upper terrace. The latter measures 750 square feet and is furnished with a wrought-iron table, chairs and sun loungers. Thirteen steps up from this level is a double bedroom with a gondola-style bed and small step balcony, as well as a bathroom with shower, and a small single bedroom suitable for a child or nanny.
If you have more than one car, there is guarded parking only 100 yards from the house for 18 Euro/day. Or you can skip cars altogether and use the bus, which stops right in front of the property. A short flight of steps leads down to several food shops, restaurants and coffee bars.
