Movie stars have stayed in this former bishop's palace on the slopes of Mount Etna. We can't say who they are but you will see their framed photos when you arrive, along with their warm thanks for their hostess's hospitality. It's hard to say what they enjoyed the most: the large sunny rooms filled with original antique furniture; the grand piano for after-dinner entertainment; the stunning swimming pool with its covered patios; the many quiet seating areas in the large private garden; the pool table and basketball hoop; the orchard whose fruits are yours to pick; the extensive paths through the estate's silent pine woods….. Most likely a combination of all these qualities, which add up to provide a first-rate relaxing vacation in a secluded location within easy reach of all Eastern Sicily's many wondrous sites.

To get here, you drive just 44 km from the Catania Airport. On the edge of the tiny village of Piedimonte Etneo, the property is within walking distance of a few shops and places to eat. Parking is inside the electronic gate, in front of the 19th-century mansion. Off the wide foyer is a spacious living room with couches, the piano, a TV, stereo and telephone. Next door is the dining room, for eight, which opens onto a covered patio for al fresco dining overlooking the pool.

A grandiose white marble staircase leads up to the 2nd-floor landing, which opens onto a large terrace furnished with table, chairs and sun loungers. In the well-stocked kitchen you will find a full fridge/freezer, oven and cooktop, dishwasher, and washing machine. All the bedrooms open onto balconies. The master has crown moldings, plaster decorations and a king-sized bed. There is also one with two twins or one king bed, and a single bedroom. The two bathrooms both have bathtubs.

Across the yard is the Guesthouse, one of the most popular lodgings in this part of Sicily. You enter via 18 steps up to the covered terrace furnished with table, chairs and sun loungers to enjoy the distant sea view. Inside is the sunny living/dining room, with ceiling fan, couches, chairs and a dining table for six. The separate kitchen has a fridge/freezer, oven and cooktop, and dishwasher, as well as a laundry room with washing machine. Both bedrooms have two twins or one king bed and open onto a balcony. They share a big hall bathroom with bathtub, separate stall shower and double sinks. Central heating in both houses makes this a wonderful year-round retreat for families or nine friends who wish to explore the fascinating area around Mt. Etna and return to relaxing evenings at home.
