Were you swept away by the spectacular landscapes in the movie of The Twilight Saga: New Moon? How would you like to stay right there, in one of those picture-perfect lone farmhouses atop its own little hill, surrounded by rolling hills planted with golden wheat or gleaming vineyards? Well, lucky you, because here is your chance! Podere di Montepulciano is a small Nobile vineyard comprised of an ancient farmhouse on a hill and a small separate studio. This was among the first houses in Tuscany to be rebuilt according to the strictest tenets of bio-architecture, using no substance known to be harmful to man.
Although the building criteria are some of the most sophisticated, these houses are 100% typically Tuscan. Guests stay in five apartments or the little house, all named after contrade that participate in Siena's Palio horse race. Each has its own separate entrance, and all are spacious and sunny, with terracotta or flagstone floors, wood-beamed ceilings, whitewashed walls, homey antique furniture and, of course, brand-new modern kitchens and bathrooms with shower and hair dryer. Each apartment has a living room and separate bedroom and every window has full screens.
At the farmhouse, the three ground-floor apartments are called Bruco, Tartuca and Oca. Bruco (556 sq. ft.) has a large living/dining room with double sofa bed and kitchenette, double bedroom and bathroom with shower. Tartuca (782 sq. ft.) has a large living room with double sofa bed, eat-in kitchen, two double bedrooms and two bathrooms with shower. Oca (816 sq. ft.) has an even larger living/dining room with double sofa bed and kitchenette, double bedroom, bathroom with shower and dressing room. Upstairs, L'Aquila (491 sq. ft.) has a living/dining room with double sofa bed and kitchenette, double bedroom and bathroom with shower. Across the landing is Torre (550 sq. ft.), a romantic air-conditioned duplex that has a living room with fireplace and eat-in kitchen on the lower level and a spacious double bedroom (with double bed) and bathroom with shower upstairs in the tower. Only a few steps from the main house is Onda, a cozy studio featuring a living/dining room with kitchenette, double bed and bathroom. Onda is small, so we recommend it as an adjunct for large parties who are already renting another apartment.
The big picture window in the living room of Oca overlooks the winery's small cantina, as well as the panoramic swimming pool. From here you'll have stunning views of the towns of Montepulciano and Montefollonico, a handful of similar farmhouses and, only a few hundreds yards away, the magnificent church of San Biagio. Recent studies have proven that the combination of magnetic and subterranean fields make this church one of the most biologically "positive" spots in Europe.
The other great feature about this property is its proximity to so many wonderful places. You'll want to make easy day trips to Pienza, Cortona, San Quirico d'Orcia, Montalcino, Siena, or the thermal baths at Bagno Vignoni. Take at least one day to "stray" across the border into Umbria: Perugia is only 35 miles away, and along the route you'll see lovely Città della Pieve and Lake Trasimeno. Florence and Rome are equidistant: only about 80 miles of autostrada, which is a mere ten miles from the property.
