Santa Maria Novella

There has been a hotel on this spot since the days when Florence belonged to Napoleon -- and indeed, an atmosphere of the Empire reigns throughout the many impeccably elegant sitting rooms. After a complete tear-down and top-to-bottom renovation unveiled in late 2007, this is now what we consider one of the city's most stunning hotels. Satins, velvets, brocades and leathers, all in beautiful jewel-tone colors, are embellished by marble statuary, crystal chandeliers, original oil paintings in gilded frames, and intricately inlaid wood paneling. Although it is right in the heart of the busiest part of the city, once you step across the threshold you will be in a cocoon where all sounds are muted, and the soft lighting makes us all look like movie stars! The combination of central location, stylish Old World design, warm reception and up-to-the-minute amenities makes this the best choice for anyone seeking a quintessential Florentine experience.

Location: On Piazza Santa Maria Novella, a square which itself has undergone a total renovation, becoming one of the nicest outdoor spaces in Florence. Only one block from the station (which is, however, hidden behind the spectacular façade of the newly-cleaned church), the hotel is also five minutes' walk from the Cathedral, Ponte Vecchio and San Lorenzo. All other sites in the city are within 15 minutes' walk. Click here to see a map.

Public transportation: Florence 's excellent electric buses stop one block away at the station -- but you can walk to everything except Piazzale Michelangelo and Pitti Palace. Please do not consider this hotel if you must have a car, as it is in a strictly pedestrian area.

Rooms: 71, including singles, doubles, triples, junior suites, suites and one rooftop aerie that is perfect for a honeymoon -- or a marriage proposal, for that matter! All have parquet floors and are furnished with the colors of the church: dark green, wine red and gold. Many have wood-beamed ceilings or canopy beds or walk-in closets; superior rooms have views of the square and church; for families, there are two sets of connecting double rooms. Triple rooms have a king bed plus sofa bed; suites have a sitting room separated from the bedroom by an arch, and some have a terrace; the very special Bellavista room is on the top floor, with gorgeous furnishings and two private terraces. Non-smoking rooms are available.

Features: Air conditioning, double-glazed windows, flat-screen satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, complimentary high-speed DSL or wireless connection, safe big enough for a laptop, full-length mirror, luggage rack, evening turn-down, kettle and tea/coffee things, and mini-bar. Electrical adaptors and plugs, iron and ironing board and extra pillows are available on request. Each room has a private marble bathroom with oversized stall shower with rainforest showerhead, or bathtub and wall shower, hair dryer, telephone, towel warmer, makeup mirror, and Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella courtesy set. Robes are provided in junior suites and suites; wheelchair-accessible bathrooms have stall showers with a marble seat.

Facilities: Elevators; American buffet breakfast in the most spectacular rooms in Florence; wireless in the lobby; fitness room (treadmill, weights, stationary bike); complimentary sauna; cocktail bar; room service until midnight; garage parking nearby at 30 Euro/night.
