For anyone who wants to experience what it was like to sojourn in a grand European hotel in the 19th century, this is one of the most lovingly maintained examples we have encountered. Step off the busy central Roman street and through the swinging doors and you are immediately immersed in another, more refined age. In the elegant grand salon, it almost seems possible to envision ladies wearing lacy gowns and picture hats sipping tea and chatting quietly with gentlemen in dove grey frock coats. Had you stopped in here during the 1950s and 1960s you were most likely to run into Maria Callas, who had her own suite with a secret door that went straight into the Opera House next door. If it’s ultra-modern sleek you desire, this is not the place for you. But if you wish your lodgings to be as historic as the city you’re visiting, then this hotel is certain to be your Roman dream come true.
