Frequently our readers ask us to help them locate the famed "Room With a View" that was the protagonist of E.M. Forster's novel as well as the incredibly romantic Merchant-Ivory film. For years we had to disappoint them, because the historical pensione that inspired the original story finally closed its doors in the early 1990's. But we are happy to tell you that both young lovers and ageless romantics can now enjoy that venue again, since this hotel opened its doors in June, 2002. The guestrooms and services are brand new, but the building dates back to the 1200s, and a great many of the original features have been painstakingly restored, so that some guestrooms have portions of stone walls, the Internet point has exquisite 14th-century frescoes, and the breakfast room is .... well, there's a good chance the incredibly ornate salon could distract your attention from your eggs!

Public Transportation: Several buses stop within 2-3 blocks of the hotel, but you rarely need to take public transportation in Florence, especially if you're staying in a central location like this one.         Rooms: 42 rooms, including standard doubles and triples, executive doubles, deluxe doubles, and suites. All have modern furniture, and wall-to-wall carpet or parquet. All the rooms with river views of any kind are executives. Rooms on the 2nd floor see the river through the arches of the Vasari Corridor, 3rd floor rooms have views of the river across the roof of the Corridor, and 4th floor rooms have full river views. The Room With a View from the movie is a deluxe double: it has a double bedroom, bathroom with bathtub, and private furnished terrace with awning. Executive rooms have two armchairs; deluxe rooms have a sitting area with sleep sofa below and a double bed on a sleep loft above. All the rooms on the river side are very sunny.         Features: Soundproofing, air conditioning, double-glazed windows, color satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, wireless Internet access in rooms where the walls are not three feet thick (!), mini-bar, safe, luggage rack, big wardrobes with shelves, and good reading lights. Bathrooms are lined with marble and have oversized stall showers or bathtubs with glass doors, robes, telephone, magnifying mirror, hair dryer, and many have two sinks and/or a separate toilet room.         Facilities: Elevator; wireless Internet access in the lobby; very special breakfast room for hot and cold buffet; In Italy Online guests get a complimentary drink at the cocktail bar on the roof with spectacular views of Ponte Vecchio and the rooftops, 24-hour room service, international newspapers, goodnight tea; parking available nearby.
