Mont Blanc Hotel

THE FOLLOWING DATES ARE SOLD OUT IN 2008:
August 8-17

Nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc, 3000 feet above sea level on the panoramic slope of a sunny mountain between world-class vineyards and fruit orchards, sits the tiny ancient village of La Salle. Its cluster of grey stone chalets has been almost completely restored, with total respect for the charming local architecture that dates back to the days when the Roman legions tromped through on their way to clash with Hannibal's army. From here the view of Mont Blanc and its sister peaks is breathtaking, unspoilt by any traces of modern life.

Small herds of cattle graze the deep green pastureland amongst some of the highest vineyards in Europe, origin of the famed "Blanc de Morgex et La Salle" wine. Nearby is the parish church of San Cassiano, crowned by a beautiful Romanesque belltower. Town Hall is the wonderfully restored Maison Gerbollier, where concerts and other summer events play out while the sun sets behind the golden peaks. Just outside the village stands the castle of Châtelard, with its cylindrical tower built on the remains of three levels of fortified wall. This breathtaking, unpolluted valley is perfect for lovers of walking, who can choose from countless well-marked trails; for skiers, who will enjoy myriad alpine and cross-country itineraries; and even for snowshoe lovers, who can explore almost anywhere in the region. No matter what time of year you visit this paradise, you will enjoy the sights of the Alps, the sounds of silence, the glimpses of plentiful wildlife, the tastes of succulent meat and cheese specialties, and the aromas of the exquisite local wines.

And did we mention the friendly local residents? Although there is plenty of tourism in this area, the region is one of the best organized in Europe so it never seems to get out of hand and the locals show genuine appreciation for visitors from afar. They emerge from their alpine chalets wearing traditional local costume -- ladies in crisp white lace and gentlemen in short suede jackets -- and they welcome you with sincere warmth. You will love this delightful chalet inn at first glance, but you'll be even more delighted when you cross the threshold into a world of polished wood, delicately painted decorations and hand-embroidered upholstery. No matter what type of room you choose, you will find it well appointed and cozy, with unforgettable views just outside your windowpanes.
