This classic 19th-century grand hotel has been managed by the same family for four generations, and has been the home away from home for crowned heads, celebrities and jet setters for over a century. Occupying a prime location right in the heart of Como at the water's edge, it is the perfect choice for those who wish to visit the lake without having a car.

Location: In Como city, on the main square across the street from Lake Como. It is about one hour's drive from Milan (49 km away). The renowned silk showrooms that supply every famous fashion designer in the world are within 5-10 minutes' walk, as well as the town's fascinating historical buildings, which date back to medieval times. Click here to see a map.     Public transportation: The steamers stop often right in front of the hotel and ply between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo and the historic villa gardens for which Como is famous. The rail station for trains to Milan and Switzerland is about 600 yards from the hotel.     Rooms: 71 rooms on five floors, including doubles, triples, and junior suites, with carpet or parquet floors. 15 rooms face the lake. Some standard rooms have lateral lake views; all superior rooms have closer or front-on lake views, plus larger bathrooms and a small sitting area; some superior rooms also have small balconies; all superior triple rooms have lake view and balcony. There are a very few connecting rooms. Junior suites have a sofa in a sitting area; for three guests a single bed is added. A few non-smoking rooms are available.     Features: Air conditioning, double-glazed windows, color satellite TV and pay TV, direct-dial telephone with DSL connection, and mini-bar; some rooms also have a safe. Each room has a private bathroom with stall shower or bathtub, and hair dryer.     Facilities: Elevator; restaurant open 7 days a week; room service 7am-midnight; coffee bar; indoor parking (14 Euro/night - must be reserved at time of booking).
