Historic Palermo Hotel
|
|
The heart of downtown Palermo is a fascinating place. Never for the faint of heart, it is immensely satisfying for those whose interests go beyond the cultural and the culinary, those who are curious to know what it’s actually like to be a resident of the places they visit. If you are mainly focused on the illustrious past of 500 years ago, you will find that Palermo is a treasure trove. But if you also want to immerse yourself in one of Italy’s most lively, authentic, contradictory and mysterious lifestyles, then this is a great location for you, because it is in the heart of a middle-class residential neighborhood that grew up around what was once Italy’s most infamous penal institution: the Ucciardone, involuntary home to every major Mafia figure since World War II, as well as the renowned anti-Mafia trial in which 400 criminals were brought to justice inside the world’s most heavily fortified courtroom. Today the ancient fortress has been emptied and there is talk of turning it into a Museum of the Mafia. Well, as you can imagine, the debate around that proposal is very heated! The issue will eventually be resolved, but whatever the outcome, this is a wonderful little neighborhood very near the harbor, filled with gentrifying apartment houses, shops, cafes, restaurants and this former coach house, where the only thing approaching sinful behavior is the excessive pampering dished out by the friendly young staff.
