The views from this ancient country home are some of the finest we've ever seen in Italy. They stretch in every direction for miles and miles, across the many-colored valleys to the hill towns of Monteriggioni, Colle Val d'Elsa and San Gimignano. In springtime the fields are bright yellow with flowering jasmine, in summer the soft beige wheat alternates with the emerald green of the vineyards, which turn red, gold and purple in the fall. You are likely to linger longer than expected at your window or the swimming pool, hypnotized by this supreme beauty which has made Tuscany the famed destination that it is.

The estate is just outside the miniature town of Strove, whose origins go back as far as the Etruscans. The road they built was later usurped by generations of devout Christians, who trudged the Via Francigena on their way to pay homage at the Vatican. For centuries a constant stream of knights, peasants, peddlers, priests, prostitutes and pilgrims made their way past this spot. Nothing but the deepest silence reigns here these days, but as you gaze out your window you can imagine the sights, sounds and smells of those long-gone informal parades.

Years later, during the Renaissance heyday of Florence, this venerable old castle is said to have sheltered the Ghibelline troops who were fighting to restore the Pope's domination over Tuscany. The tradition of hospitality continues today, albeit of a far more peaceful variety: the one double room and 13 suites are all equipped with heating, air conditioning, whirlpool bathtub or shower, direct-dial phone, satellite TV and safe; the suites also have a kitchenette with mini fridge, sink, cooktop and all the equipment you need to prepare light meals. There is wireless access throughout, and no smoking is allowed anywhere on the property.

Thanks to its superb location at the heart of Tuscany, Tuscan Hillside Vistas offers its guests countless opportunities for day trips. Siena, Montalcino, San Gimignano, Pienza and Volterra are all nearby; Florence, Cortona, Arezzo and Umbria are only slightly farther. Be sure to enjoy a stroll through the estate's own olive grove, or a relaxing afternoon by the very elegant panoramic swimming pool, or perhaps an invigorating bike ride to the fairy-tale walled hamlet of Monteriggioni.
